Recently announced functionality in Collaborative Lifecycle Management V6.0

Strategic reuse of development assets for complex systems and software

Version 6.0 offers a new and open federated configuration management system that extends the benefits of SCM to requirements and test artifacts by:

  • Creating baselines and supporting parallel development of multiple versions and variants, branching and merging, and change management
  • Preserving the traceability relationships among those engineering artifacts in multiple tools
  • Defining complex products and applications as hierarchies of components and reuse those components in multiple products and applications

To support strategic reuse (and product line engineering) across the Collaborative Lifecycle Management, each of the Collaborative Lifecycle Management applications has been enhanced in the current release. Each application supports the configuration management of its own assets (for example, requirements within Rational DOORS Next Generation), as well as the link relationships to the other assets across the Collaborative Lifecycle Management (for example, Rational DOORS Next Generation handling traceability links to Testing artifacts in Rational Quality Manager).

Enhancements in each of the Collaborative Lifecycle Management applications

Configuration Management (DOORS Next Generation)

Maintain control of the scope of a release with requirement and design versioning and parallel development streams.

DOORS Next Generation V6.0 is the first release that includes capabilities to aid in configuration management of requirements. On a basic level, configuration management provides a way to manage groups of artifacts and their versions or variants.

By default, these new capabilities are turned off, and project administrators have to enable them for the server and for each project area where users want to take advantage of them.

Requirements enable specification of the scope of a release, control cost, fine-tune details, and build a product. Writing and maintaining requirements can become extremely complex and difficult, especially when users have many versions of their requirements for different variants or releases of their product. With configuration management, users can efficiently create different streams to help manage this complexity without the need to make copies of their requirements. Additionally, there is robust linking that is specific to the stream the user is working in. This means following the link shows users the requirement, test, or design element on the other end of the link that is appropriate for the stream in which they are working. The ability to compare across streams and baselines helps users to understand how their versions or variants are different and correct any mistakes.

Global Configuration Management (DOORS Next Generation)

Plan and manage the reuse of configurations in the many versions or variants of the product or software line.

Create cross-tool development streams and baselines. Automatically handle links between artifacts when branching or delivering changes to another stream such as links between tests and requirements.

Custom attributes for streams, baselines and snapshots (Rational Team Concert)

Rational Team Concert SCM supports custom metadata for streams, baselines and snapshots. Users can create custom attributes for supported artifacts and then query the artifacts later, which are based on the value of these custom attributes.

Setting and querying for custom attributes is supported in the command-line interface. This feature is useful for scripting and customization and can be used for many use cases. For example, a release engineer can set a custom attribute on a baseline to indicate its status, such as new, testing, published, released, or rejected.

Hierarchical components in Rational Team Concert SCM (Rational Team Concert)

Rational Team Concert V6.0 enables users to define nested components. This feature is turned off by default as it is available in the Eclipse client and the command line. In the current release, it has not been fully implemented in the Rational Team Concert Client for Microsoft™ Visual Studio IDE.

See the jazz.net library for more information about how to enable and make use of this feature.

Configuration Management (Rational Quality Manager)

Rational Quality Manager V6.0 is the first release that includes capabilities to aid in configuration management of test artifacts. On a basic level, configuration management provides a way to manage groups of artifacts and their versions or variants.

By default, those new capabilities are turned off, and project administrators have to enable them for the server and for each project area where users want to take advantage of them.

A key benefit of configuration management is to enable users to better manage changes and go back in time if needed.

  • Create baselines to record a state in time of a Quality Management (QM) project area. Baselines are immutable and defined for an entire project area. Test artifacts of a baseline cannot be modified.
  • Compare current state of a Quality Management project area with any previous baseline. The comparison provides both a high-level view of the differences at the project area level, as well as a detailed side-by-side comparison at the artifact level.
  • Roll back some of the changes by merging a previous baseline into the current state and replacing some artifacts by the previous version from that baseline.

Additionally, for users who have the need to work independently and in parallel on multiple versions or variants of test artifacts, the configuration management capabilities enable them to:

  • Create parallel streams by branching from an existing baseline. Streams are versions of all the test artifacts of a project area that can be changed. Streams are mutable.
  • Merge some changes made in one stream into another one by first looking at the differences and then replacing all or some of the current versions by the version of the artifacts in the baseline.

Global Configuration Management (Rational Quality Manager)

The tool-specific Quality Management configurations, both streams and baselines, can then be contributed to global configurations. Global configurations are cross-domains configuration that can link to multiple local configurations from the Requirements Management, Design Management, Software Configuration Management, and Quality Management applications. Global configurations are used to defined a common context in which users can work and create all the deliverables for a given version or variant.

Finally, by creating a hierarchy of global configurations, it is possible to manage composite product definitions and configurations that enable complex reuse scenarios at the sub-systems and components levels.

Limitations when Configuration Management (Rational Quality Manager) is enabled

Note that the following limitations are defined when working with a Quality Management project area with configuration management enabled:

  • BIRT and Rational Reporting for Development Intelligence and Insight reports are not supported.
  • The Rational Quality Manager mobile application for offline test execution is not supported.
  • The Rational Quality Manager offline test execution capability that uses Excel is not supported.
  • The Rational Quality Manager Word and Excel Importer is not supported.
  • Requirement reconciliation capability is disabled.

Continued improvements in Rational Team Concert for IBM® Enterprise Platforms

Scalability improvements for build map storage

Build maps are first-class objects. Advanced tasks, such as promotion, deployment, and maintenance are simpler, and allow build map history to be searched.

User experience enhancements (Build/Promotion, Interactive System Productivity Facility), UCD integration

Improvements to the Interactive System Productivity Facility client include the ability to:

  • Compare with repository
  • Share new members
  • Share a new component history
  • Display of version identifiers

Sparse loading allows the workspace to be specified. Multiple promotions can run in parallel; build enhancements include checking the build definition that is appropriate to the workspace being used. New preconditions allow subsets to be enforced at build time and delivery to be restricted to promotions. Users can create UrbanCode deployment packages from the Rational Team Concert packaging interface.

Steer and SAFe support for Agile teams, the Agile Enterprise and DevOps for Hybrid Cloud

Support for SAFe (a new SAFe template for agile programs and teams)

A predefined template to support Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) 3.0 is available. Users can use the template to accelerate their adoption of SAFe, and leverage the automation of Rational Team Concert to manage key SAFe artifacts, such as program epics, features, PI objectives, and Kanban boards. The template also supports key SAFe events, such as release planning, iteration planning, and retrospectives. This template is designed to support a single project for a program and multiple teams. Calculated attributes, such as Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF), are built-in.

Even if users are not using the SAFe framework, this SAFe template could be used for all new Agile projects because they are based on Agile improvements for scrum users. They offer the flexibility to adopt the SAFe capabilities in the future.

Rational Team Concert Quick Planner continued improvements

Rational Team Concert Quick Planner support for mobile devices

The Quick Planner UI is optimized for small, touch-screen mobile devices. Users can easily view and modify work items by using Quick Planner on their small-screen mobile device. Small-screen UI improvements include:

  • Easy readability of work items without having to zoom in, intuitive small-screen navigation
  • Touch-friendly interfaces for quickly creating new work items and filtering existing ones

Rational Team Concert Quick Planner support for Found In function

All Quick Planner views support the Found In function. Users can create a defect with the + syntax and filter work items with the + syntax. Content assist displays a list of releases. Expanded view shows the Found In value and saved filters store the Found In value.

Rational Team Concert Quick Planner that integrates with additional in-line reports

Several Jazz™ Reporting Services predefined reports are embedded into the Quick Planner interface. The Team's Work page has a History Reports option that offers three burn-down and three burn-up reports. The reports run specifically for the iteration, which is selected as the current context. If the iteration does not have children, the reports show progress from the start to the end date of that iteration. If the iteration does have children, these reports represent the release burn-down and burn-up reports that show the status at the beginning of each child iteration. The Iteration Planning page has a History Reports option as well, which includes an average velocity report for up to three previous iterations.

Ranking in hierarchical plans

Rational Team Concert V6.0 extends the support for hierarchical ranking that first appeared in Rational Team Concert Quick Planner. The rank column in plans, which uses the parent-child tree display, reflects the tree hierarchy. The Apply Rank button and the Apply Rank Above and Remove Rank Below menu items are enabled for tree views that are not grouped.

Git integration improvements

For more information, visit

https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/RTCGitSSHSupport

Jazz Reporting Service is included, installed, and configured as part of Collaborative Lifecycle Management

The Jazz Reporting Service is packaged in the Collaborative Lifecycle Management suite along with the Collaborative Lifecycle Management applications (RTC, RQM, and DOORS NG). This increases the availability to deploy better reporting services for all of the applications without the additional effort of finding, installing, and configuring reporting capability through a separate download and install. The Jazz Reporting Service is light-weight, main stream, operational reporting service that offers predefined reports along with a self-service report builder that offers all project team members the ability to create personal or team reports to help drive project development. The Jazz Reporting Service includes the following components: Report Builder, Data Collection Component and the Lifecycle Query Engine (see additional note regarding LQE as technology preview).

Note: Reporting for metrics/analytics is considered separate from document generation supported by RPE. Rational Publishing Engine (RPE) is the solution for document generation and the delivery of high fidelity specifications from your project data.

In the Collaborative Lifecycle Management V6.0 release, the Jazz Reporting Service 6.0 replaces the Rational Reporting Development Intelligence solution as the strategic approach to operational reporting. For users who still require the Cognos-based reporting (including the support of existing Rational Reporting Development Intelligence reports), which is offered through Rational Reporting Development Intelligence, this reporting remains supported through a Cognos® integration to Jazz Reporting Service. Further details can be obtained through release documentation.

New predefined burn-down and burn-up reports

The Jazz Reporting Service has burn-down and burn-up reports to show by the number of hours, story points, as well as work item count. These reports further compliment the wide range of existing predefined reports that can be found in the report library.

Reporting integrated with Quick Planner supporting project Planning

There are Out of the Box burn-up and burn-down reports (as announced here), which are available through the report library the Jazz Reporting Service. And these same reports can also be displayed and embedded in other Jazz-based tools. Specifically, Rational Team Concert Quick Planner which now includes these same predefined OOTB burn-down and burn-up reports to help with the planning and monitoring. With embedded reports instead of standard dashboard reports, these reports are displayed directly in-line with Quick Planner to ease the practitioner's ability to track and monitor the release progress directly in the planner's view.

Interactive runtime filters in the dashboard widget

Reports are even easier to self-serve, change, and modify directly in the project dashboard. Once a report is created, it is usually viewed directly on a team or personal dashboard. In the current release, it is possible to change the conditions and focus on other values of the report without the need to go back through the report builder. As the conditions are updated, the report automatically reflects those changes immediately in the report.

Report calculation and roll up along with graphical report drill-through

Self-service report creation is extended to add the long anticipated ability to aggregate and calculate values into a roll up report. This offers the team the ability to see the true quantitative report for Average Value, Total Count, Max/Min Values, and the Sum Total for work items, test, and requirement artifacts. Beyond the ability to build calculated reports, the practitioner also has the ability to drill into the details of self-serve, graphical reports and discover the data items that are contributing to the results displayed in the report.

Report Publishing through the Rational Publishing Engine

The export capabilities are expanded beyond Microsoft Excel to support graphical formats Scalable Vector Graphics, Portable Network Graphics and a more robust connection to export through the Rational Publishing Engine. Project team members have the ability to take any team or personal report and publish it to a Rational Publishing Engine by using a preferred template and additional data sources. Published project documents can include the metrics value reports that help track and drive the project that are included in the high-fidelity specification they provide as part of the project deliverables.

Technology Preview: Near live operational reporting with LQE and Configuration aware reporting

The Lifecycle Query Engine that is provided in the Jazz Reporting Service and with this release includes the ability to preview this new technology for live operational reports along with the future ability to report on Configuration Management controlled projects. As a preview only, it is offered for evaluation only and not in production environments. See product documentation for further details.

Usability enhancements with continued focus on large-scale client deployments

Diagram editor (DOORS Next Generation)

Users can create many types of diagrams to refine and communicate their ideas and to elaborate their requirements.

The diagram editor provides high-quality diagrams that are simple to create in all supported browsers without the need for a Java™ plug-in. The large selection of shapes and themed styles make it easy to create many types of diagrams with eye-catching color palettes. To increase productivity, users can use the keyboard to create all the diagrams. They can comment on and create links between individual diagram elements and other artifacts. Diagrams can be added to modules and embedded in rich-text artifacts.

Support for concurrent modification of the same test artifact (Rational Quality Manager)

If two users are modifying the same test plan, test suite or test case, the second person who saves their changes can merge their content with the first person's content and save the merged content.

A new Test Statistics dashboard widget is available in the catalog (Rational Quality Manager)

Users can use this widget to show the results of any saved test artifact query in a graphical format, such as in bar charts, pie charts, and column charts, as well as tables.

Single Sign On (Rational Team Concert)

Rational Team Concert 6.0 supports Single Sign On (SSO) based on OIDC and Kerberos/SPNEGO authentication for Rational Team Concert clients.

The following Rational Team Concert clients can authenticate with a server that is configured for Kerberos/SPNEGO-based authentication:

  • Rational Team Concert Eclipse client
  • Rational Team Concert client for Microsoft Visual Studio IDE
  • Rational Team Concert browser-based clients
  • Windows Explorer integration
  • Command-line interface
  • Jazz build engine

Aggregate email change notification (Rational Team Concert)

Users can aggregate changes that occur to the same work item in a single email, which ensures that they do not receive a large number of emails for changes within the same notification interval. A simple aggregate template is provided by default. To customize templates, see the project administration page.

Performance improvements to plan loading (Rational Team Concert)

Users can limit the scope for plans to certain attribute values to reduce the number of items fetched during the initial load. This feature is useful for plans with a large number of items, particularly for items that users do not normally want to see, such as resolved items. Users can limit the scope to these attributes: type, state, and filedAgainst. By default, this scoping capability is disabled. To enable it, see the CCM Advanced Properties page, and set the Enable Plan Scope Restrictions property.

Performance improvements to Microsoft Project export-import (Rational Team Concert)

The time required to re-import a plan in Microsoft Project XML format is ten times faster than in previous releases. Initial import has been improved by about ten percent. The actual performance gain depends on the file that is imported. Microsoft Project 2013 support is added.

Floating User Single Install

Floating User Single Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A Floating User is a person who is accessing the program at any particular point in time. An Install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if the Floating User simultaneously accesses more than one Install of the program, the Floating User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee must obtain separate entitlements for each Floating User simultaneously accessing the program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example: via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.

Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate User of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

Authorized User Single Install

Authorized User Single Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the Program. An Install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if the Authorized User has accessed or has access to more than one Install of the program, the Authorized User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User given access to the program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example: via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.
